Cake Disasters and Winner !

Evening bloggers,

It is very late this evening with me doing my blog update but it was such a busy hectic day !

First off it was Alan’s Birthday as you all knew and he woke up excited to open cards and presents and then off he went to school and it was time to start his cake.
He wanted a Hansel and Gretel inspired Gingerbread House. The house was made the day before and was all ready to put together.

The pieces

The selection of sweets

The walls went up and the roof went on. Into the fridge for setting it went.

Then I started to decorate it. I got this far

It went into the fridge to set at this point and I was making a cup of tea while this set some and when I opened the door to get milk out for hubby’s coffee, DISASTER had struck, the front and roof had collapsed. So what did I do..I closed the fridge door quickly, made my cuppa, had some choccie cause that makes everything seem better and debated my options. It was 11.30 am and I had just over 3 hours to come up with a cake for Alan and for it be be ready when he got home from school.

I tell you chocolate gives you brain power. I finished my tea and back out to the kitchen and hauled out the mixer and ingredients and mixed up these two chocolate flavoured madeira cakes. I make a mean madeira cake even if I say so myself lol

Into the oven, quick tidy up and some lunch was gotten while they baked and all the while I’m thinking, how am I going to decorate these. Alan had given me no other ideas. So once it was cooled I set to decorating and this is what I ended up with.

I call it barrels of smarties and m&m’s birthday cake. Its got a jam and cream filling and chocolate finger biscuits to make up the barrels and then tons of smarties and chocolate m&m’s were filled into the barrels.

I’m really pleased to say he loved it and was so pleased with it. It tasted very delicious as well lol.

The rest of the day was spent going to piano and organising a birthday tea and then it was Alan’s turn  to draw the winner for the Robin Hood chart. He loved his picture by the way and has picked out a spot on the wall for it and discussed it with his Dad for when it will go up. I’ll take a picture of him with it before it goes up lol.

And the winner was Jennifer M. So Jennifer if you could email me at my email addy (its located along the side bar on the right) with your snail mail address I’ll get the chart out in the post to you.

I think if you are still here at this point you need a cup of tea and a slice of that cake lol.

For the remainder of the night I do believe I’m going to sit and do nothing else, not even stitch or knit, I just don’t have the energy.

Ruth

  5. Oh mercy! I would have probably been tempted to say, "And this is what the house looked like after Hansel and Gretel BLEW IT UP so no other children would try to eat it!" LOL! But your solution was much better. =) I had to google to see what a madeira cake was…we don't have this recipe in the States, at least not that I know of. Chocolate madeira sounds good! I don't suppose you'd share a recipe??
